The pressure switch can be divided into a high and a low-pressure switch. And each type of pressure switch has two circuits: normal open pressure switch or normal close pressure switch and changeover. Changeover means the standard terminal switches between two contacts, allowing the switch to be used in either NC or NO operation. Changeover contacts are also referred to as SPDT (Single Pole Double Throw).

Different types of symbols are in use. The IEC and the NFPA (JIC) define the most commonly used symbols. There are symbols for normal close, normal open, and changeover contacts.
